Out of 12 gold medals with mention awarded in Belgium, the most, as many as five, went to the Poles. In addition, the Silesian University of Technology PhD student, Michał Mikulski, received the only Gold Medal for Young Inventors. Moreover, Polish inventors received 14 special prizes awarded at the exhibition by various institutions.
Brussels Innova Fair is the leading international exhibition event in the field of innovation. The fair is devoted to technology transfer and implementation of technical progress. This year saw the 60th edition of the event.
The inventions awarded the gold medals with mention included a method for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride developed at the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute in Warsaw, and two inventions of the Military University of Technology in Warsaw: a cryptographic tool National Encryption Device, and a lidar for detection of biological threats. Gold with mention also went to Tele & Radio Research Institute in Warsaw for developing multipole permanent magnets and to a team from the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice for developing a battery waste treatment process.
The National Encryption Device also received the Special Award Energy and Environment, and permanent magnets - the Prize of Polish Minister of Economy, Mr Waldemar Pawlak.
Gold Medal for Young Inventors and the Prize of the Contest Brussels Eureka were awarded to the Silesian University of Technology PhD student, Michał Mikulski for an electromyogram controlled uniaxial arm exoskeleton. The young inventor has prepared a prototype worn robot, which can be successfully used for rehabilitation of patients with high amputations, muscular atrophy and related diseases. For his invention, the young scientist had been previously awarded the Academic Master of Innovation title in Poland.
Great Prize of the Jury INNOVA 2011 went to the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute team for developing the technology for obtaining amino acid, which is one of the key intermediates in the synthesis of an anticancer drug active ingredient.
The team from the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine PAS and the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Warsaw received the Special Award Health & Medicine. The scientists conducted research on selective carriers of platinum for cancer treatment.
